PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST

James Yuncken has been exhibiting regularly in Melbourne for around 20 years (at fortyfivedownstairs since 2008). He began studying privately in Canberra in 1986 under Christopher Croft of the Graphic Investigation Dept, Canberra School of Art. Later he did master classes with Graham Nickson of the New York Studio School in 1998 and 2004.

Prior to painting James completed Degrees in Science, Law and Computing.

SUMMARY
1986 Took up drawing age 32. Studied with Christopher Croft of the Graphic Investigation Department, Canberra School of Art
1987 - 1989 Painting and drawing in my spare time whilst working for the Attorney General's Department in Canberra
1990 - 1992 - Commenced full-time as artist. Working from Studio One Printmaking Workshop, Canberra – studied etching and lithography.
Produced about 50 editions, most of which were exhibited in group and solo shows
1993 - 1994 Returned to Melbourne. A series of landscapes in oil, pastel and drawing media, exhibited in my studio in 1995
1995 - 1997 A series of figurative works produced and shown at Galerie helengory in an exhibition titled First Steps
1997 - 1999 - Preparation for second solo exhibition at Galerie helengory titled 'Non-objective Representations' commencing 6th July 1999. Primarily, figurative and landscape works
- Attended the New York Studio School Drawing Marathon Master Class at the 1998 Adelaide Arts Festival
Work on two anatomical bas-reliefs
2000 - 2001 A series of landscape works produced and shown at SPAN Galleries in an exhibition titled Presence/Absence
2002 - 2003 A series of landscape works produced and shown at SPAN Galleries in an exhibition titled Sense of Place
